Google On Buying Spammy Domains: Don’t Be The Guy Left Holding The Bag

In the latest Webmaster Help video from Google, Matt Cutts takes on an interesting topic. Can you buy a domain that has been penalized by Google for spam, clean it up and recover rankings?
Well, it depends, and Cutts explains why.
“This is a tricky question because on the one hand there’s algorithmic spam, and then there’s manual spam, and all manual spam does have an eventual time out, so if you were to completely clean up all the content on the domain, [and] do a reconsideration request, in theory, that domain can recover,” says Cutts. “However, on the algorithmic side, if there are a ton of spammy links that the previous owner built up, that can be a little bit hard to go through, and try to clean up and get all those links taken down, and make a list of all those links.”
He continues, “The way to think about it is, there are a lot of spammers out there that do basically what’s known as a ‘churn and burn’ tactic, where they just use as many techniques to try and make a domain rank as they can, and then as soon as that domain is awful or bad, or Google has caught it, then they sort of movie on, and they go on to some other exploit, and they try to tackle it with another domain. Now what you don’t want to do is be the guy who gets caught left holding the bag.”
Long story short: how bad do you really want this domain?

Are You More Or Less Worried About Google’s Panda Update Now?

As previously reported, Google’s Matt Cutts revealed at SMX this week that Google would be pushing a refresh to its famous (or perhaps infamous) Panda update on either Friday or Monday. As of Friday, it appears that the refresh has arrived.
Have you felt the effects of the latest Panda update? Noticed any improvements in Google’s search results? Let us know in the comments.
Barry Schwartz is pointing to some forum chatter about webmasters already seeing the effects of the refresh, indicating that it has likely begun to roll out. As others have pointed out, it’s not uncommon for Google to do this on a Friday. Schwartz says signs point to the roll out starting on Thursday afternoon and into Friday.
This isn’t just your typical run of the mill Panda refresh, however. This could very well be the last time Google manually pushes one, as Panda is becoming more of a “rolling” update. Schwartz quotes Cutts from SMX:
Rather than having some huge change that happens on a given day. You are more likely in the future to see Panda deployed gradually as we rebuild the index. So you are less likely to see these large scale sorts of changes.
As of the time of this writing, Google has not made a formal announcement about this latest Panda refreshed, and it’s entirely possible that they won’t. Given the nature of Pand deployment going forward, it’s unlikely that Google will do so from here on out. We have to just accept Panda as an ongoing thing. No more anticipation of the next big Pand update. You can just count on it happening on a regular, ongoing basis. Actually, Google has come out and said that it’s unlikely to confirm Panda updates from now on.
It remains to be seen just what kind of an impact this will truly have on sites, but it’s not likely to make things much easier.
Don’t worry though, you can still anticipate the next big Penguin update, which Cutts also discussed at SMX. He said they’re working on the “next generation of Penguin,” which he is implying is going to be a big one. Google is also talking about cracking down on “bad online merchants”. It will be interesting to see how this affects ecommerce sites, and what Google really considers “bad”.
“We have a potential launch later this year, maybe a little bit sooner, looking at the quality of merchants and whether we can do a better job on that, because we don’t want low quality experience merchants to be ranking in the search results,” Cutts said about that.
We have been waiting for the next Panda/Penguin. Maybe that’s the one we’re looking at. You have to wonder how many sites it will impact. I can easily envision a firestorm of merchant freak-out.
Cutts also reportedly said Google will be targeting more link networks this year.
We’re also still waiting on Google to put out what used to be its monthly lists of algorithm changes (or “search quality highlights” if you will) for the past several months, dating back to October. This is the longest Google has gone without releasing the lists since they started doing it, which they were doing in the name of “transparency”.
Panda recently turned two years old, and opinions of Google’s search results since its implementation vary. With the latest refresh, Google has gone through 25 iterations of Panda.

The Best Strategy to Generate Free Ongoing Traffic for Your Website

We all know that generating traffic and lots of it is a major key to make a living online. The problem is that over 90% of all websites fail simply because they do not generate enough traffic to sustain an ongoing income for their website. Why do only some websites become successful while others are like a dry desert? And why do some websites struggle so much while others seem to make it with less effort?

Maybe you are in that category, lacking the incoming traffic to your website and if so, I would urge you to keep reading…

Regardless of what you’ve been told, or sold, the #1 way to generate consistent traffic day in and day out is not a super secret push button tactic or by blasting links on Twitter and Facebook. It’s not trying to get on the first page of Digg, or buying ad banners on popular websites.

The #1 way to get great web traffic is the same as it always has been since the Internet began, which is to pair information seekers with good information.

Yep, we’re talking search engine optimization (SEO), which if done well, will have people stumbling onto your blog, website, or sales page doing what they do naturally, which is by searching on Google.

When SEO Fails

You might have heard the story recently how Google penalized websites that were abusing the system. These “content farms” and other manipulative moves were trying to work outside the rules, and as soon as Google got tired of it, they knocked them out of the rankings. For example, you may have heard about the Google’s Panda update, which caused lots of websites to drop in ranking positions.

This is what happens when you use push button systems and don’t learn the true SEO fundamentals you need to operate with a “white hat” (abiding with the Google’s Guidelines).

Learning the Techniques that Work

To really master SEO, you need to learn all of the fundamentals and techniques that SEO professionals use on a daily basis. There is a reason all Fortune 500 companies have a dedicated SEO professional, and why small business all over the world are begging for people to help them rank better.

Regardless of whether you want to become an SEO consultant, or just want to learn the ropes so you can sell more of your own products, you simply cannot miss with this professional SEO training program from Marketing Ignite. The training is provided by one of the pioneers, Johan Hedin who is an SEO expert since the early days of 1998. Obviously he has a wealth of knowledge and experience having positioned thousands of keywords in the top slots of Google for his clients.

So if you want to learn how to really gain those top rankings, I strongly recommend his course, which is called The Professional’s Training Course in SEO. It will definitely save you lots of time and money by cutting straight to the meat without the useless and tedious SEO strategies that don’t work. I think you have seen or been through them already. You can be assured that this course will lead you step by step in an easy to learn format, giving you the confidence to become an SEO expert.

AdSense Lets You Add Notes To Keep Track Of Account Changes

Back in October, Google announced some changes to AdSense performance reports to improve usability and make the reports more visually compelling. One of the changes involved the ability to view changes to an account in more detail with the “Show events” checkbox or a separate event report.
“Change events are automatically generated and are shown as small flags on your reporting graphs,” explains AdSense product manager Matt Goodridge. “Those annotations help you keep track of the actions you’ve taken in your account, like adding a new ad unit or blocking an additional category, and help you determine the impact of your changes.”
Based on user feedback, Google has made some further changes.
“In addition to these automatically generated events, you can now also manually add notes you want to keep track of,” says Goodridge. “This will allow you to find out whether actions which aren’t directly related to your AdSense account, like a website redesign or an advertising campaign for your site, may have had an impact on your earnings. Every user can see all the notes which have been added to an account by other users and can add, edit, and delete their own customized notes.”
Users can add personalized annotations by going to “Performance reports,” and viewing the changes as an overlay or a separate event report. From there, click “Add note” and you’re all set.

Google's First PageRank Update In 2013

Google has begun pushing out new PageRank values to the Google Toolbar yesterday. This would make the first Toolbar PageRank update of 2013.

Normally Google updates PageRank values in the Google Toolbar every 3 months or so. The previous update was in November 2012 and before that in August 2012.

Despite PageRank still being part of the algorithm, SEOs know that toolbar PageRank is often outdated and not that useful. In addition, there are many other factors part of the algorithm that may or may not be as important as PageRank.

Even though, I hope your PageRank values increased and did not decline.

The first 2013 Google Panda update is here

Well the Google Panda updates are still rolling in as Google stays determine to weed out low-quality websites from the search results, and provide users with the best content available and possible.

This Panda update will affect 1.2% of English speaking queries.

If, after today you start seeing a dramatic decrease in your website rankings and traffic, you may have been affected by this update.

If the opposite is true for you, there's a chance you've been bumped up because your competitor fell or because your website is considered higher quality than some of the other sites in the results.

Google's aim at high quality sites

In case it's a mystery to you, the reason Google and other search engines are so concerned about the quality of websites, is because the quality of a website to a user reflects back onto the search engines.

An easy example of this is if someone finds a website through Google search, then purchases a product or service on the site using their credit card and later finds out their credit card was compromised after using it on the site in question.

In the end, the person could end up being a user that resents Google for showing them search results that lead to them having your credit card scammed.

That's just one scenario, there are many other potential possibilities.

So with that in mind, give your website a once or twice-over and even get an SEO to take a look at it for you just to ensure everything is in tip top condition.

Google provided a great quality checklist in the link I added above so check that out and make sure your website is treating users like it's supposed to.
